5 The Impacts of Travel
The fastest growing contributor to climate change in the UK is carbon dioxide emissions from road transport. The strategic approach that we have adopted to adresss this issue is discussed further in Chapter 5 of the LTP2.
The ever increasing demands to travel and the resulting increases in traffic, given that a high percentage of journeys are made by road vehicles, also have direct impacts on road safety, congestion and the state of the highway network. These are discussed in the following sections.
