7 Bus Services and Air Quality

The delivery of this Bus Strategy will have an impact on air quality in Cornwall in the generality due to the anticipated increasing numbers of people making more sustainable travel choices.

The policies set out in this chapter will contribute towards the following LTP2 aim:

Reduce the growth of traffic congestion and transport related air pollution and improve public transport.

The Air Quality Strategy is contained in Chapter 9 of the LTP2.

In terms of specific contributions, the bus operators are already identifying means of reducing the average fleet age in their individual businesses.  Opportunities to boost frequencies along key corridors as part of the delivery programme will also provide opportunities for investment in newer and therefore more environmentally sustainable vehicles.

Bus operators will also be encouraged to consider using greater percentages of Bio-Diesel in their vehicles.  Opportunities to facilitate this will be via the tendering process.

Investment in new vehicles will help towards improving air quality
