3 Specific Objectives of this Strategy

The central objective of this School Travel Plan Strategy for Cornwall is:

  • To encourage more school users to walk, cycle, car share and use public transport to travel to and from school.

As a result of this central objective, future outcomes not only include less car use, but also school populations becoming healthier, air pollution levels and road accidents around schools decreasing, and young people being prepared to make informed decisions about how they travel, and the consequences of those decisions in the long term. This objective and the ensuing Strategy is also moulded by the demands of national, regional and local policy as outlined in Section 2 of this document. LTP2 and the TTSI both make demands on this Strategy  which will be intrinsic to measuring success and which, in summary, are as follows:

  • All schools will have implemented a School Travel Plan by 2010
  • No increase in the proportion of pupils travelling to school by car (excluding car-share) between 2006/2007 and 2010/2011
In addition, a local target has been set for Cornwall's  Principal Schools for Sustainable Transport (PSST): 5% decrease in the proportion of pupils travelling to school by car between 2004/2005 baseline, ( 2006/2007 where none) and 2010/2011
