FESTIVE FIRE SAFETY TIPS FROM CORNWALL COUNTY FIRE BRIGADE

Christmas dinner, wrapping presents and decorating the house – there’s lots to think about this Christmas. But one thing Cornwall County Fire Brigade is urging Cornwall’s residents and businesses to put top of their Christmas lists this year is fire safety.

Statistics show that you are 50% more likely to die in an accidental house fire during the festive period than any other time of year. In England in 2006 there were 3,530 accidental house fires in December[1] – more than any other month.

Although fire safety is important at every time of year, the extra distractions of Christmas make it especially important to be vigilant during the festive season.

Cornwall County Fire Brigade has issued DVDs with tips and advice for businesses to ensure they comply with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order with regard to Christmas decorations. There is advice on using flame retardant decorations, and how to make sure a Christmas tree isn’t a fire hazard, along with startling images of a fire fuelled by Christmas decorations. DVDs have been sent out for free and can be used for staff training, or to show in-store as a public safety message.

Chief Fire Officer, Matt Littmoden says, “Christmas is a time for having fun with family and friends, however it is also a time when extra fire hazards are introduced to the home such as fairy lights, candles and decorations. We are urging you to think about fire safety ahead of the Christmas period, ensure you buy British Standard fairy lights, place candles in holders and away from curtains, and never leave cooking unattended. Following simple guides will make sure everyone is safe to enjoy the festivities.”

Ken Yeo [Lib Dem], Executive Member for Public Protection says, “I am delighted with the ongoing work of raising public awareness undertaken by the Fire Service and the work of Trading Standards in ensuring that products and especially toys are safe bringing enjoyment to children at Christmas who receive them as presents. I ask everyone to be aware of the dangers and therefore avoid an incident that will spoil this special time for them.”

Cornwall County Fire Brigade is able to visit homes and carry out free Home Fire Safety Checks to help keep you safe from fire. For more information on fire safety in the home, or Home Fire Safety Checks, go to www.cornwall.gov.uk/firesafety or call 0800 3581 999.
