Fire In School Science Laboratory

Helston School and Community College, Church Hill, Helston at 06/01/2009 11:26

Two crews from Helston and one from Mullion attended a laboratory on fire at the school this morning. The fire started after a science experiment involving iron oxide, magnesium and aluminium powder went wrong. Crews used a carbon dioxide extinguisher to extinguish the fire. Six breathing apparatus were used and a positive pressure ventilation fan to blow smoke from the school building. The Laboratory and connecting corridor involved were isolated and will be cleaned by specialists. The school pupils were then allowed back into the unaffected parts of the school.
