Cornwall County Fire Brigade hosted a celebration evening at Falmouth Maritime Museum last week to mark the half way point of its highly successful Supporting Community Values project.
Supporting Community Values is a Big Lottery funded project, which will run with current funding until August 2010. The Supporting Community Values team have spent time in the top four most deprived areas in Cornwall, Treneere (Penzance), Penzance Central, Pengegon (Camborne) and Redruth North. They provide courses for children, young people, families and parents which help to build confidence, raise aspirations and teach healthy living and discipline.
Speaking of the event, Chief Fire Officer Terry Standing said, “This event shows exactly how we have assisted communities in bringing about change and achieving a safer and improved quality of life. This has been achieved by the excellent work carried out by the team, ensuring our communities are the heartbeat of the project and that they acknowledge they have a joint responsibility for the outcomes if they want to change. It’s an initiative the brigade is very proud of, I hope to see it continue and eventually spread across the whole of the county.”
Doris Ansari, Chair of Cornwall County Council adds, “These young people are truly an inspiration and the fire service should be very proud that it has enabled them to grow into such well rounded individuals. We are extremely thankful to the Big Lottery for the funding that has helped the project happen and I hope that it will continue to run for many years to come.”
