at 14/05/2009 14:52

Fire, Emergency Management and Environment Service staff from Cornwall Council are currently waiting for the arrival of a demolition company to knock down the buildings used as storage by local fishermen which have been severely damaged by today’s fire in Newquay. .

Following an assessment of the stability of the buildings by Martin Clemo, Principal Engineer with Cornwall Council, it has agreed that they will be demolished immediately. This will allow fire crews access to the interior of the buildings to finish damping down.

It is expected to take between two and three hours to knock down the walls of the buildings and, once they have been declared safe by the Fire Brigade, it is hoped that local families will be able to return to their homes.

Senior Emergency Planning Officer Richard Fedorowicz said that while it was not possible to give an exact time, he hoped that everyone would be back in their homes by the end of the day.
