Fire In Top Floor Flat

Near the Police Station, Tolcarne Road, Newquay at 24/05/2009 02:46

Following a report from the police of a flat on fire, firefighters from Newquay and St Columb were mobilised.

The flat, on the top floor of a three storey building measuring six metres by five metres, was well alight and further assistance was requested. An aerial ladder platform from Newquay, a fire appliance from Perranporth, an operational support vehicle from St Austell and a command support vehicle from Truro were sent.

Firefighters, some wearing breathing apparatus, fought the blaze using jets. There was a partial floor collapse and firefighters used the aerial ladder platform to gain access to the roof, to assist the firefighting.

Update at 0415hrs: Neighbouring properties have been checked and there is no fire spread. Jets are still in use dealing with hotspots.

Update at 0600hrs: The crews have now left the scene. Officers will return later this morning to continue the investigation into the cause of the fire.
