The Briigade's resources were mobilised to the old Avers Garage at Redruth, on the first attendance the building was found to be well alight, and more pumps were requested for the incident. At one stage there were persons reported in the building. A total of eight firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were committed to fighting the fire, but they did not enter the building because of the danger it posed. Apart from the fire appliances at the scene, the aerial ladder platform, two water carriers and the command support vehicle attended. The building was approximately 70 metres by 40 metres and completely destroyed. Properties in the immediate vicinity were evacuated, with the persons being taken to Redruth Fire Station. At the height of the fire there were approximately 50 firefighters from Redruth, Camborne, Perranporth, Truro and Penzance on scene. The fire was eventually extinguished using four jets. Crews were detained a considerable time. Thankfully all persons were accounted for. The cause of the fire was doubtful. The Arson Task Force have been on scene carrying out their investigations. Further details may be obtained from Devon & Cornwall Police.
