Joshua Olds from Truro was celebrating last week as he was treated to a VIP visit to Truro Community Fire Station and then took proud possession of a Wii games console, Wii fit and LCD flat screen TV as winner of a prize draw.

Joshua entered the draw when he visited the Community Safety stand, part of Cornwall Council’s exhibit at this year’s Royal Cornwall Show at Wadebridge.

Visitors to the stand were asked to take part in an interactive quiz to test the safety knowledge of the public with the results used to assess the effectiveness of the brigade’s education programme, and complete a questionnaire on the public’s awareness of, and satisfaction with the Fire Service.

Younger visitors were encouraged to play a giant floor game to road test a new initiative called early learning fire safety (elfs), a new concept in encouraging fire safety awareness from an early age.

Phil Cooper, Watch Manager, Community Safety commented: “We were absolutely delighted with the huge response and would like to thank the thousands of people who took the time to come and visit us on the elfs and quiz set inside Cornwall Council’s stand. We always value any opportunity to engage with the public and the chance to test that our safety messages are getting through in a fun and interactive way was brilliant”.
