Cornwall County Fire Brigade Stages Charity Kayak Race

at 25/08/2009 11:57

A charity kayak race organised by firefighters from Cornwall County Fire Brigade raised over £275 for the Fire Fighters Charity and the Avalon Trust, a charity for sick and under privileged children.

Twenty three participants paddled their way from Fowey to Lostwithiel in the 10 km race in aid of the two charities.

Cornwall Council cabinet member for children Sally Bain sounded the claxon for the start of the event which saw firefighter Pete Griffett emerge triumphant with fellow firefighter Sean Taylor in second place and Martyn Matthews in third.

The double kayak title was retained in a convincing fashion by the Fowey team of Gary Rawle and Matt Lawrence, with Mark Kass and Scott Brown in second place followed by Justin Sharp, Dave Edlin and the infamous inflatable parrot.

Chief Fire Officer Des Tidbury, Cornwall Council cabinet member for Stronger Communities Lance Kennedy and Iain Mackie the High Sheriff of Cornwall greeted the kayakers as they arrived at Lostwithiel to be presented with trophies for their efforts.

The successful evening concluded with a barbeque courtesy of firefighters at Lostwithiel Community Fire Station.

Crew Manager, Community Safety Mark Kass and the other firefighters involved in organising and taking part in the event extend their thanks to all those who supported it.
