Cornish firefighters will take part in a rowing challenge in aid of the Fire Services National Benevolent Fund at venues across the county on Saturday August 9 and Sunday August 10, 2003.
Teams will work in relays on machines at 10 town centre and major tourist locations, including The Eden Project and the National Maritime Museum, Falmouth, with the aim of rowing the equivalent of the 874 miles between Land’s End and John O’Groats over the two days. Chief Fire Officer Mick Howell has set a personal challenge by pledging to row 5000 metres at each venue.
Fifteen rowing machines have been donated for the event by Concept Rowers, suppliers of fitness equipment on the county’s fire stations.
Firefighters have been busy collecting sponsorship over recent weeks and also hope to boost funds through street collections at each venue.
The Fire Services National Benevolent Fund, which celebrates its Diamond Jubilee during 2003, provides support to serving and retired fire service members and their families during times of injury, illness or financial need. Money raised during the Diamond Jubilee year will help convert the Fund’s therapy centre in Cumbria for use by disabled children of fire service families.
