Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service’s supporting community values team joined forces with Cornwall Council colleagues from leisure services and with the local Community Network Manager to help stage a two day skate event for young people at Pengegon playing field on 12 and 13 April.
The event was organised by Claire Arymar, Neighbourhood Manager for Parc an Tansys, Pengegon, Gwelmore and Grenville Gardens who was recently awarded a Certificate of Achievement by Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service in recognition of her dedicated and longstanding work in helping the fire service deliver its youth development programmes.
On the first day, children were helped with tips on how to maintain and decorate their scooters, bikes or skateboards and coaching on how to skateboard was provided by professional skate boarder Will Pender from Helston.
On the second day Grip Skate shop from Helston decorated the area with banners and posters from official skate brands which gave the whole park an authentic competition feel. Children from 4 years old to 17 years old took part and there were competitions for each category- scooters, BMX and skateboards.
At the end of the competitions, Grip Skate shop kindly donated posters, stickers and various goodies to everyone so that no one went home empty handed.
White Watch crew from Camborne Community Fire Station took part in a football match against the local Pengegon team who were led to victory by manager and dad Shane Morgan.
Neighbourhood Manager Claire Arymar said: “It was a glorious two days of sunshine and skating. A rough head count on both days totalled about 100 children per day and approx 30 parents watching proudly as their children competed in the lovely sunshine. A big thank you to everyone who made the event extra special for all the young people participating Thanks go to both Olly Clark from the Supporting Community Values team and Sam Bennett of Cornwall Council’s Leisure team whose time, effort and constant encouragement and motivation made this event memorable and thoroughly enjoyed by all.”
Local Cornwall Councillor Morwenna Williams who helped to fund the event said: “This event was possibly one of the most successful and well attended this area has seen and everyone is urging us to do it again as soon as possible, especially parents who said they would like to do things with their children like this more often.”
