Cooker Fire - Neighbour Leads Woman To Safety

Wheal Rose, Porthleven at 25/04/2010 17:19

A woman was led to safety, when a fire involving a cooker actuated a smoke alarm and alerted a neighbour. The neighbour also correctly dialled 999 and called out the fire service.

Two fire appliances from Helston attended and found that the cooker had been turned off prior to their arrival and the fire had gone out. The crew ensured that the occupant was in a place of safety and she was checked by ambulance personnel for the effects of smoke inhalation.

The crew vented the smoke from the first-floor flat before leaving.

It is fortunate that the flat was fitted with a working smoke alarm and, although it did not alert the occupant, it did alert a neighbour who was able to take the appropriate action to prevent a tragic incident.

If you do not have smoke alarms in your home, please fit them as soon as possible.

If you do have smoke alarms in your home, please test them now to ensure they still work and offer the valuable protection for you and your family.

If you are unsure which type of detector is most appropriate for your home or you are unsure where to position them, please call and request a free Home Fire Safety Check on 0800 3581 999. Even the call is free.
