Waste Fire Upate

Lean Quarry, Horningtops at 24/06/2010 15:51

Emergency services are currently attending a fire at the Lean Quarry landfill site near the A38 at Horningtops, Liskeard, crews from Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service and other agencies have been containing the blaze at the site ownen by Viridor.

As a result of the fire a large plume of smoke is currently drifting over and towards areas of West Plymouth, Seaton, Saltash, Torpoint and Landrake in a south easterly direction.

A 2km cordon has been put in place around the site and people in two properties have been spoken too but have decided to remain there.

Police and other agencies are advising people who can smell the smoke to stay indoors and keep windows closed for the rest of the day.

There are some minor road closures around the site, however the A38 remains open. Motorists travelling through the smoke should keep windows closed, turn off air conditioning and keep their air vents closed.

There is no immediate risk to public health from the smoke, but any smoke can be an irritant and people inhaling it may experience coughing, runny eyes or shortness of breath. However, symptons usually disappear very soon after and do not lead to any long-term health problems.

People with existing underlying health conditions, such as asthma or other chronic chest conditions should be aware that inhaling smoke may make their symptoms worse. Those who use an inhaler are advised to have it on their person.

If sysmptons occur people should contact NHS Direct on 0845 4647.

The fire itself continues to burn and Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service remain on site and are expected to for the rest of the day.
