Specialist teams from Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service will be taking part in an action packed Rescue Day at Flambards in Helston on Saturday 14 August.
The packed programme of events include demonstrations from Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service’s Vehicle Extrication Team. Made up of firefighters from Camborne, Redruth, Mullion and St Mawes, the team will be honing their skills as they prepare for their appearance at the Vehicle Extrication World Championships in Ireland in September after finishing in sixth place at the national competition last October in Glasgow.
The extrication team are sponsored by Sims Metal Management who allow them to practice and improve their skills at their scrap yard in Camborne.
Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service fire investigation dog Nelson will also be demonstrating his skills. CFRS is one of a handful of services within the UK to employ the services of their own fire investigation dog team.The dogs are used as a tool to search cold,post-fire scenes for the presence of flammable and ignitable liquids that could have been used to start or promote fires deliberately.
Nelson Junior is a Springer Spaniel and is Cornwall's newest fire investigation dog. Nelson has been operational for a year and both Nelson and his handler, Watch Manager Mark Smith have worked on many different investigations for Cornwall, Devon and Somerset and even Gloucester Fire and Rescue Service.
The activities on the day include displays from other emergency services including the Police, Ambulance Service and Cornwall Council Road Safety Unit.
The event starts at 10.15am and Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service, Police, Ambulance, Coastguard; RNLI will have vehicles for the public to look around and personnel to answer any questions you may have. The focus will be on raising the awareness of public safety while on holiday and will include information on road safety including child car seats, water safety and safety issues when walking cliff paths.
