Cornwall County Fire Brigade will be fitting 200 Kidde Safety Smoke Alarms in houses thoughout Perranporth, Perranzabuloe, Camborne, Redruth and Hayle thanks to money donated from Hayle Lions, Camborne and Redruth Lions, Cornubian Lodge and Perranzabuloe Rotary.

The donations are part of a scheme introduced by the Brigade in order to fit smoke alarms in as many homes as possible throughout Cornwall. Local Businesses and Clubs are encouraged to work in partnership with the Brigade. Moneys raised by these establishments are used to fit working smoke alarms in homes of those seen as target groups. These target groups are: older people as statistically they are more at risk of injury from fire and less likely to own alarms and parents where an alarm may be particularly effective in preventing death when the fire involves young children.

“A fire strikes when you least expect it, often during the night. It also spreads very rapidly, but the real killer is smoke. If you are asleep when a fire starts and you don’t have a smoke alarm to wake you, your chances of surviving are zero. Smoke suffocates quickly, and you’ll be dead before the flames reach you”

said Station Officer Kevin Thomas, Camborne Fire Station

“the partnerships we have received donations from today will assist the Brigade greatly in their aim to have every home in Cornwall fitted with a working smoke alarm. In the event of a fire a smoke alarm is not an early warning, it is your only warning”

Members of all four establishments and Cornwall County Fire Brigade will be fitting a smoke alarm at 24 Bodriggy Court, Hayle on Monday the 25th February 2002 at 10am.
