As the summer months are approaching and with the warmer spell that we have been having the barbecues are slowly moving out of sheds and garages. Everyone enjoys the social event of a barbecue but with this in mind Cornwall County Fire Brigade would like you to be aware of the dangers surrounding them:
O Ensure that the barbecue itself is stable and located on level ground
O If there is a wind blowing, make sure that the wind is blowing away from you when you light the barbecue.
O Do not wear loose clothing that could flap onto the lighted barbecue and ignite.
O Do not use flammable liquid other than recommended barbecue lighting fluid. NEVER USE METHYLATED SPIRITS, PARAFFIN OR PETROL.
O Preferably use fire lighters. If you choose to use lighting fluid, follow the manufacturers instructions and DO NOT SPRAY ON TO A HOT BARBECUE - IT MAY BLOW UP IN YOUR FACE.
O When lighting the barbecue do so at arms length.
O Keep children away from the barbecue.
O Dispose of the charcoal safely after the barbecue has cooled completely.
O Remember the Country Code.
Wadebridge Firefighters are working with Williams and Son Butchers in Wadebridge to promote safe barbeque tips. Throughout the coming months leaflets and posters will be available explaining how to have a safe barbeque.
The firefighters will be outside the store today with a practical demonstration of how to barbeque ‘safely’.
