Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service firefighters in the Falmouth and Penryn community have been working with landlords and engaging with students to deliver a targeted fire safety message in the local community.
Students at Henry Scott Tuke House have received education and a demonstration from the Stations Red Watch personnel following targeted fire safety activity from the Stations local fire safety Officer Justin Ashburn. Watch Manager Ashburn has worked closely with managers to reduce false alarm calls from automatic fire detection at the address.
Station Manager Justin Sharp explained: “The number of unwanted fire signals recorded in Cornwall accounts for almost 30% of all calls. Our Falmouth & Penryn community risk profile confirms this data”.
We are delighted to be working with managers at Henry Scott Tuke House to reduce some of these calls whilst delivering a community safety message to students. It’s a win-win situation. For example 15 false alarms a year can cost the Service up to £8500.
Henry Scott Tuke House had 12 recorded unwanted fire signals last year and 15 the year before. I’m delighted to report that through the joint work of managers, fire safety officers and station crews there have been no recorded unwanted fire signals since the new intake of students on 1 September 2010. This just goes to show that by working together we can make a difference and ensure we continue to provide an efficient service to our community.”
