Fire In Flat

Wendron Street, Helston at 05/12/2010 20:50

At 20:50hrs Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service were contacted by a concerned member of the public, stating that the smoke alarm was sounding in their neighbour’s property. The caller stated that there were no initial signs of smoke or fire but the lights were on inside of the property and the alarm had been sounding for some time.

Fire crews attended the incident and on arrival found the property heavily smoke logged with the occupier still inside and the smoke alarms actuating. The fire crews rescued the casualty and then continued to extinguish the grill pan fire

The owner of the premise was intoxicated and decided to start cooking. The owner then fell asleep leaving the oven on and the room quickly filled with toxic smoke.

Without the quick thinking of a neighbour and working smoke alarms the incident could have been very different and this just reinforces the importance of having working smoke alarms in your premise

The attending Officer wanted the original caller to be contacted and to be thanked for their quick thinking to report the alarm, as people are becoming complacent when hearing alarms sounding. Upon hearing smoke alarms within properties please do not hesitate to contact the Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service on the ‘999’ Emergency line
