House Fire

Melbourne Terrace - Penzance at 17/01/2011 11:11

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service were called to a house fire in Melbourne Terrace, Penzance early this morning (Monday 17 January).

The initial call was taken at 5.30am and it was reported that there were people in the property.

Two appliances attended from Penzance, one from St Ives and one from St Just. The incident command unit from Truro and the operation support unit from Falmouth also attended.

Fortunately, the property was fitted with smoke alarms which meant that the woman and four children asleep in the house were alerted to the fire and were all out of the building before the fire service arrived.

The fire investigation team are now on site to determine the cause of the fire.

Incident commander Andy Barrett said: “The fact that the property was fitted with working smoke alarms has been crucial in ensuring that the occupants were given early warning of the fire and were able to make their escape. I cannot emphasise enough how important a working smoke alarm is for every household.”
