Bodmin Community Fire Station at 2 pm on Wednesday 16 February

Two groups of people not in employment, education and training (NEET’s) will be celebrating their achievement in completing an innovative six week course, devised and delivered by Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service’s Supporting Community Values team in partnership with Cornwall Works, designed to help them improve their employment opportunities.

Referred by local job centres, those on the course were given the opportunity to gain an ASDAN level one qualification as they took part in a range of fire service activities to promote teamwork and communication skills and raise confidence. The course includes trainer training, first aid, interview techniques and life skills. As part of the course the group were also given a variety of opportunities to engage in voluntary activities within the community. The week following the presentation a signposting event will be held with a selection of other agencies to help support their future development.

CFRS Chief Fire Officer Des Tidbury said: “I am encouraged to see how our Supporting Community Values team has been able to use the work and reputation of the fire and rescue service to help these young people develop useful new skills.”

Cornwall Council cabinet member for stronger communities Lance Kennedy said: “These courses are an excellent example of how, by working with partners, we can really make a difference to the lives of these individuals. I am delighted to celebrate the young people who have embraced this opportunity to learn from the best.”
