Children Learn Important Safety Messages As ‘hazard Alley’ Returns To Liskeard Community Fire Station

at 04/03/2011 14:02

This March more than 600 primary school children in south east Cornwall will be learning important safety messages over 4 days of activities as Hazard Alley returns to Liskeard Community Fire Station.

Cornwall’s Community Safety Partnership which includes the Police, Police Authority, the Primary Care Trust, Probation and Cornwall Council services including Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service and the Crime and Disorder Reduction Team, will be showing children from 20 primary schools practical examples of how to stay safe when negotiating various hazards in different situations.

Topics will include road safety, personal protection, beach safety, electrical safety, antisocial behaviour, drugs, alcohol, fire safety and how to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

David Parker from the Community Safety Partnership who has organised 9 agencies to come together to help deliver 9 key safety messages said: “It was not possible to host this popular event last year due to staff reorganisation and it was very much missed. I am delighted that the Community Safety Partnership has been able to reinstate it and that 20 primary schools from south east Cornwall have enthusiastically responded to the invitation. We know that carefully targeted safety education which involves the children does work, and we aim to ensure that all children throughout Cornwall receive it. The schools use the event to fulfil some of their objectives under Personal Social and Health Education (PSHE), and overall the feedback from the schools has been really positive. During the week there will be a competition which involves all of the children filling in a worksheet and with prizes up for grabs.”

Devon and Cornwall Police; Cornwall Council, including Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service; the RNLI and Western Power have all contributed to this initiative.
