Three People Rescued By Fire Brigade

Hawkins Road, Newquay at 14/10/2003 11:06

A health visitor calling at the property could hear the smoke alarm sounding, and could see flames through the glass. After getting no response from the owners the Health Visitor informed the occupants in the flat above of the fire and asked them to call the Fire Brigade. When two crews from Newquay arrived they could not get any response from the occupants either so forced their way in. They discovered a small fire in the bathroom which they immediately extinguished. They rescued a mother and child who were asleep in a bedroom, and a female asleep in the other bedroom. The fire was caused by candles which were left unattended on the bath. The candles had burnt down and set light to the plastic bath, which caused a horrid acrid smoke. The occupants were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene and were later taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.
