at 19/05/2011 09:31

Ten students from Falmouth School are about to begin a year long Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service led mentoring programme, part of which will involve them clearing and tidying up Events Square in Falmouth.

The ten girls recently completed a 5 day Phoenix Project course at Falmouth Community Fire Station.

The Phoenix Project has been run by Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service

(CFRS) since 2002 and develops young people’s self-confidence, teamwork and communication skills and also aims to give them a greater awareness of their communities.

The students from Falmouth School are beginning their twelve months of mentoring and will continue their engagement with CFRS by completing a road safety awareness programme; covering anti social behaviour and its effects with Devon and Cornwall Police and will also have an opportunity to work alongside Falmouth Town Council as part of the programme.

Scott Brown, Phoenix Project Manager said: “We are delighted that Falmouth Town Council have shown an interest in developing this link and hope that we can develop a good partnership and community resource that allows the students from Falmouth School to put something really positive into their community.”

The students will work in the community undertaking various activities in the town, such as painting, street clean and organising a community event. Following this programme the girls will go on a reward day to celebrate the hard work and commitment that they have shown during the 12 months.

Falmouth Town Manager Richard Gates said: “On behalf of Falmouth Town Council and myself, I fully endorse the work that the Phoenix Project will be undertaking to ensure Falmouth continues to improve. It is great to see Falmouth school working with the fire service in this excellent initiative”
