Call To Assist Vessel Stranded On Rocks

Between Bryher & Tresco IOS at 02/06/2011 00:34

At 00:30 hrs this morning following a request from MRCC Falmouth Coastguard, CFRS Fire control in Truro mobilised a crew from Bryher on the Isles of Scilly to assist pumping operations on a stricken Vessel, the Keewaydin. The Keewaydin had run aground on rocks between Bryher and Tresco earlier that day. A water pump from Bryher was taken to the vessel at low tide via a smaller craft and was left in place at 02:30 hrs, waiting for the incoming tide to lift the boat free of the rocks. At 04:22 hrs Fire crews water pumps was keeping up with the water flowing into the boat, the tide was rising and by 05:16 the vessel had been lifted free from the rocks. Once raised off the sea bed, the boat was towed to Green Bay, Bryher.
It was reported at 05:36 hrs the Keewaydin had been successfully beached in Green Bay. In this sheltered bay it is hoped that temporary repairs can be made to the vessels hull to enable it to reach port for inspection and further repair.
