General Fire Safety Advice:
Due to the dry conditions, particular care should be taken at the moment when you are having a bonfire or barbecue. A few simple considerations before you start, may save trouble later!
- site your bonfire or barbecue away from combustible material that you do not want to burn (eg shed, fence, trees, rubbish, cars etc)
- stay with your bonfire or barbecue, do not leave it unattended
- have the means to extinguish the fire, should it start to spread or get out of control (eg buckets of water, hosepipe)
- have the means to call 999 for the Fire & Rescue Service should the fire get out of control (mobile telephone or landline telephone)
- have consideration for your neighbours who may also be enjoying their garden or may have windows open in their property and do not want the nuisance that the smoke may cause
- ensure the fire is fully extinguished when you have finished. Any embers or hot coals should be damped down. Never dispose of hot coals in a plastic container
- if you think that your bonfire or barbecue may be mistaken by others for an out-of-control fire, please inform Fire Control on 01872 320205 before you light it, to prevent fire appliances being mobilised unnecessarily.
