Chip Pan Fire

Hull's Lane, off Arwenack Street, Falmouth at 29/06/2011 11:41

Two fire appliances from Falmouth attended a report of a chip pan fire. The 999 caller also requested an ambulance.

On arrival, the fire crews found one person had suffered burns following a fire involving a chip pan in a flat, which was smoke logged. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the flat and confirmed that the fire was already out. A positive pressure ventilation fan was used to clear the smoke.

The casualty was left in care of ambulance personnel. There will be no further details available from Cornwall Fire & Rescue Service relating to this person.

General Fire Safety Advice:
If your pan does catch fire:
~ Don't take any risks.
~ Turn off the heat if it's safe to do so - but never lean over a pan to reach the controls.
~ If you have a fire blanket, put it over the pan.
~ Don't use a fire extinguisher on a pan of oil - the force of the extinguisher can spread the fire.
~ Never throw water over it.
~ Don't move it - it is likely to be extremely hot.
~ If you have put the fire out, leave the pan to cool completely.

If you are in any doubt about whether to try and put out a chip pan fire yourself, then don't - leave the room, close the door and dial 999.
