Corn Field On Fire

Trewartha, Veryan, St Mawes at 25/07/2011 15:52

At 15:52 Cornwall Fire Control received a number of repeat calls to a corn field on fire. Due to the number of repeat calls, major appliances from St Mawes, Mevagissey and Truro were mobilised along with land rovers from St Mawes and Mevagissey. On the approach to the fire there was a large amount of smoke and crews requested the attendance of a Water Carrier from Wadebridge. On crews arrival, the farmer had cut a fire break in the field to stop the fire from spreading to a further two fields. In total 3 acres of corn was involved and fire crews used six hose reels to damp down hot spots, the water carrier was used to shuttle water from near by hydrants to supply these hose reels. As a consideration, the farmer also cut a fire break in the crop close to near by houses. It is believed that this fire started accidentally.
