Sprinkler System Effective In Limiting Fire Damage

Eden Project, Bodelva, near St Austell at 24/02/2012 10:19

A total of 22 firefighters from St Austell, Bodmin and Fowey Community Fire Stations attended a fire in a catering production unit at the Eden Project.

The alarm was raised by an alarm monitoring company that had received an actuation of the fire alarm. A few moments later further calls stated that there was smoke coming from a building and that it was being evacuated.

On arrival, the fire crews confirmed that there was smoke issuing from a single storey building, measuring 30 metres by 30 metres and that a sprinkler system had been activated. All persons were confirmed out of the building.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the building with one hosereel and one jet to extinguish the fire involving cardboard, that had been contained by the sprinkler system. The fire was confirmed under control by 1120hrs.

Station Manager Guy Herrington said that "the sprinkler system had been extremely effective in suppressing the fire and preventing further fire damage".
