Computer 'whizzes' Found In Fire Brigade

at 09/12/2

A group of employees from Cornwall County Fire Brigade have received their ECDL European Driving Licence Certificates from Jonathan Burnett, the Principal of Truro College.

The European Driving Licence Certificate is a seven module course covering all aspects of basic information technology. The course offers a solution to an underlying problem within the Brigade in that many of its employees have a relatively low IT skills level.

The need for well trained computer users is a critical success factor in maximising the investment in Information Computer Technology (ICT) within the Brigade. The Brigade is moving into a new era where sophisticated ICT equipment will play a key role within all positions, from Firefighter to Chief Fire Officer. Computers are used in a range of fire brigade activities including Fire Safety inspections, technical information gathering and personal development.

Earlier this year Richard Watson from Cornwall County Fire Brigade and Richard Gray of Truro College put together a trial course with a cross section of Brigade staff ranging in differing ages, gender, uniformed and non uniformed.

The criteria set by the Brigade for the course was that it had to be available for delivery by CD or Internet any time day or night as many members of staff work varying hours, needed continuing support from the college and was extremely cost effective.
“The course has proved a great success and the Brigade, along with Truro College, will be building on this partnership to make this course available to our staff as and when required”
said Richard Watson, Computing Manager
