Chemical Scare Following Dumping of Containers

Car Park, rear of Barras Street, Liskeard at 28/03/2012 21:13

One fire appliance from Liskeard Community Fire Station, one fire appliance from Looe Community Fire Station, an Environment Support Vehicle from Bodmin Community Fire Station and two specialist hazardous materials trained officers attended a report of containers giving off a smell. Police also attended.

The area around ten plastic containers was cordoned off whilst two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and protective clothing investigated to ascertain if the contents were hazardous. Following their inspection, it was apparent that the contents of the containers was cooking oil and that they had been dumped in the car park. The scene was rendered safe by 2230hrs.

To prevent the unecessary attendance of the emergency services, it is important to dispose of unwanted items in the correct manner. Whilst the fire crews (17 firefighters) and the police were dealing with this incident, they were not available to go to the aid of anyone who was genuinely in trouble.
