General Information -
Arson Prevention
Arson is now the largest single cause of major fires in the UK - and it is on the increase. At its worst, arson leads to loss of life and significant financial damage. Yet even persistent and pervasive minor arson also sets a strongly detrimental (and visually harmful) tone to deprived communities and contributes to social exclusion.
Since 1989, there have been around 1.8 million arson fires, resulting in 22,000 injuries and 1,000 deaths.
In 1999, arson cost England and Wales £2.1 billion.
