Fire crews from Looe and Liskeard Community Fire Stations were mobilised to a report of a fire alarm sounding with a smell of burning, in a communal area of a building containing flats. On arrival the fire crews reported that smoke was issuing and they requested assistance. Fire appliances and crews attended from Polruan, Lostwithiel and Bodmin Community Fire Stations with support crews and specialist vehicles from Launceston and St Austell.
Firefighters, some wearing breathing apparatus, worked hard to fight the fire in the single-storey building measuring 40 metres by 40 metres, with an open courtyard and consisting of 11 self-contained flats. The fire crews succeeded in containing the fire damage to a ground floor laundrette and an adjacent utilities area using one jet and two hosereels. Various parts of the building were affected by smoke but, fortunately, no-one has been hurt as a result of the fire and no-one required re-housing. The fire was declared under control just after 1700hrs and a fire investigation team attended to determine that the fire started accidentally. Firefighters remained in attendance damping down for a further 90 minutes.
