At 08:08 this morning a call was received from Royal Cornwall Hospital, Treliske saying that fire alarms in the building were sounding. One appliance with five firefighters from Truro were mobilised to the complex. Crews investigated the cause of the alarms and at 08:27 ‘make pumps two’ was requested after fire crews found a small fire in an electrical room on the ground floor of the tower block. A second appliance with five firefighters from Truro was mobilised to the scene. Initially crews used a thermal imaging camera and small tools to locate the fire, two breathing apparatus and three carbon dioxide extinguishers were used to extinguish the fire. The electrical room involved was on the ground floor of the five storey tower block at RCH Treliske. Fire crews prepared a dry riser at the tower block in event of requiring its use, an evacuation plan of the building was drawn up, however no evacuation of the building took place. An on site electrician isolated the electrics to the tower block and fire crews investigated floors one to five, investigating any potential fire compartments. After investigation it has been established that the fire was confined to the ground floor of the Tower Block, crews used a sengar saw to make entry to the electrical unit involved to ensure the fire was completely out and to allow inspection of the fire scene.
Fire crews remain on scene at this time; the incident has now officially been handed over to a responsible person in RCH Treliske.
