On Friday the 16th August and Saturday the 17th August firefighters from Newquay Fire Station will be helping to raise money for two World Peace Garden Stained Glass Windows.

One window, the first of its kind in the county, will be placed at the new St Austell Fire Station when it is completed later this year.

The second window will be given to a station within the New York Fire Department in memory of the firefighters who gave their lives trying to save others on September 11th. This will be the first time the World Peace Window project has had an international link.

The windows feature universal symbols of nature, such as the rising sun, the moon, the stars, sky, sea and earth. The aim of using such symbols is to remind people that everyone is responsible for the welfare of the planet and their own actions.
“In the heart of the design is an Eternal Flame representing the spark of light within all people, which surpasses religious, cultural and political differences” said Joy O’Gorman, Project Manager for the Flight of the Phoenix World Peace Project.

“The purpose of the window is to uplift the spirit whilst also providing an unconditional platform linking peoples and cultures in the spirit of peace worldwide”

The World Peace Garden Stained Glass Window Project is part of Flight of the Phoenix World Peace 2000, which is a series of projects dedicated to promoting world peace and uniting people of all nationalities and cultures

“The St Austell Fire Station window will be a standing memorial - not only to peace, but to firefighters who do not work to any political, racial or religious agenda. “said Divisional Commander Ted Simpson.

“They are there for the safety and welfare of all people, whoever and wherever they are”.

The members of Cornwall County Fire Brigade will be raising money by rowing the length of the Cornish coastline, approximately 400 kilometres, on Concept 2 rowing machines.

“The event will take place over two days at an outside venue: Woolworths Store in Newquay” said Sub Officer Steve Mitchell, Newquay Fire Station

“We hope that this will raise enough funds for us to show how we respect the work of the New York Firefighters with the gift of a World Peace Garden Memorial Window”.

This is the first of a series of fund raising events being staged by Cornwall County Fire Brigade.
