Dog Rescued From Mine Shaft

Bowling Green, Carnkie, near Redruth at 25/05/2013 09:25

Fire crews from Redruth, Camborne and Penzance, including a specialist line rescue team, attended a report that a dog could be heard from down a mine shaft. The owner of the dog reported that it had gone missing yesterday morning and he could now hear it from down the mine shaft.

The fire crews removed undergrowth from around the top of the 20 metre deep wet shaft to allow access for two firefighters to be lowered using rescue lines to rescue the large rotweiler named Maddie. Three year old Maddie was cold and tired but otherwise not injured and she had spent 24 hours in the water. She was returned to her very grateful owner who said that he had walked dogs in that area for years and was totally unaware of the shaft.

Safety advice:
Dog walkers are advised to stay on and not stray from defined paths and to keep their dogs on a lead to prevent an incident like this one.
