Chemical Spill

Pennygillam Industrial Estate, Launceston at 28/08/2013 05:58


At 0558 this morning, Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service were called to a chemical spill on an Industrial Estate in Launceston. At present there are crews from Launceston, Liskeard, Callington, St Austell and Saltash on site. These include 5 major pumping appliances and some specialist appliances, and Operational Support Vehicle, Environmental Support vehicle and Command Support Vehicle. Crews and Officers are currently engaged in making the area safe and containing the spill.

Update 0800 hours: Firefighters wearing gas tight suits are being committed to investigate at this time.

Update 0830 hours: The Pennygillam Industrial Estate has been closed and a cordon is now in place.

Update 0930 hours: Devon & Cornwall Police are dealing with the cordons in the area, four casualties have been confirmed at the scene and have been treated by Westcountry Ambulance personnel. The Environment Agency are also in attendance.

Update 1130 hours: It has now been confirmed that there were twelve casualties originally reported, of these four were confirmed and treated by Westcountry Ambulance personnel, three were decontaminated on site and discharged, one casualty has been taken to hospital.

Update 1300 hours: The chemical spillage has now been treated and the area made safe. Cornwall Fire & Rescue resources are now making up equipment and will soon be returning to their home stations.
