Small Fire Discovered Following Abandoned Call

Pencuke, between Camelford and Bude at 10/11/2013 17:58

When a 999 call was received in the Truro-based, Fire Control, a smoke detector could clearly be heard and the caller confirmed there was a fire. However, the caller was unable to hear the questions of the control operator, so the exact situation was unclear. Fortunately, with technology the address of the caller was known and two fire appliances from Bude and one fire appliance from Delabole were mobilised to the Pencuke home. The line was held open and repeated attempts to speak to the caller were made and after several minutes the caller came back to the telephone and was able to confirm the address and give further details.

The fire involved a candle that had melted and then ignited when it had inadvertently been placed on top of a woodburner. Firefighters confirmed that the fire was out and checked to ensure that the scene was safe. The occupant suffered no ill-effects, which could well have been the result of the smoke alarm successfully alerting them to the fire at an early stage.
