County Council Approves Recommendation For New Hayle Fire Station

n/a at 29/10/2002 15:26

Today’s meeting of the full County Council has backed the recommendation that Hayle should have its own retained Fire Station in order to improve fire incident attendance times.

However, the decision to build the £1 million new facility by 2005 will be subject to the County Council’s forward budget process, and to consideration by the Capital Management and Planning Panel.

Despite various measures taken by Cornwall County Fire Brigade a single issue panel had concluded that ‘present fire cover in Hayle is not sustainable’.

Concern had been expressed over a number of years about the fire cover provision in the Hayle area. Her Majesty’s Inspector of Fire Services also commented that it is an area of fire cover that needs to be considered and for those concerns to be resolved.

Other options now rejected had included upgrading St. Ives Fire Station from ‘retained’ to ‘day staffed’, or building a new two-pump fire station at Carbis Bay and closing St. Ives after an initial year of dual operation.

The blueprint for Hayle is a new £800,000 one-pump fire station crewed by retained (part-time) firefighters, with equipment and vehicles costing £200,000 and ongoing revenue costs estimated at £162,000 per annum.
