Large Workshop Fire Involving Gas Cylinders

At 21:29 this evening multiple calls was received to a workshop on fire in the area of Two Burrows, Blackwater. Initially three appliances were mobilised to the incident, a total of 18 firefighters from Tolvaddon, Hayle and Perranporth. Soon after crew’s arrival at 21:45 hours, a request for a water carrier to attend was made. Three firefighters on a water carrier from Helston were mobilised to the scene. Crews confirmed that the fire involved a single storey farm building measuring 13 x 40 metres, the fire was well alight and fire crews confirmed that several gas cylinders were involved in the fire. A request for a fourth appliance and a water carrier was made at 22:03 hrs, the incident was sectorised and firefighters are currently defensive, as it has not been possible to isolate the power supply to the building. Fire crews have now made a cordon around the fire ground, and occupants of a nearby property have been evacuated and emergency accommodation is being arranged for them by an Emergency Management officer. Two ground monitors have been set up and are applying water to the structure. On scene currently there are 45 firefighters, on four fire appliances, two water carriers, the command support vehicle, the operational support vehicle and welfare vehicle from Tolvaddon, Hayle, Perranporth, Helston, Wadebridge, St Just, Falmouth and St Dennis.

Firefighters remain on scene using two ground monitors on the fire. The crews are fighting the fire in a defensive mode due to the collapse of the roof on the building. The road outside the property has been closed by Highways crew.

Fire service attendance at this incident is now being scaled down. Two major fire appliances and two water carriers will remain in attendance overnight. A welfare vehicle will also remain in attendance with one Officer. Further decisions on action will be made after the gas cylinders have been cooled for several hours.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service have remained in attendance at this incident, crews are using a ground monitor to cool gas cylinders involved in the fire. The fire is believed to be out, but crews remain on scene damping down hot spots from a distance.

UPDATE 17:10 25/02/16
Crews continued monitoring the scene throughout the day and again returned to the premises at 16:00 hours, this afternoon, to check the site and to carry out a full re-inspection of the area affected and all is now satisfactorily extinguished. The site has now been handed back to the occupier.

The cause was accidental and spread.
