A team from Cornwall County Fire Brigade entered the National Extrication Challenge at Majeski Stadium, Reading on the 29th and 30th July in very hot conditions!

Forty-nine teams from all over the country entered the competition and each team is given a road traffic accident scenario and twenty minutes to assess the incident and extricate the live casualty.

“Scenarios are varied and complex with four pits running different scenarios at any one time. to give a few examples: a car wedged upside down under an articulated lorry trailer, a two car scenario with one car wrapped around a lamp post or a motorbike perched precariously on top of a car on its side” said Assistant Chief Fire Officer Mark Yates

Cornwall’s team was made up of Robert Martin, Roger Saundry, Keith Boyd David Harvey from Camborne retained and Paul James from Helston. They were placed in 20th position from 49 teams and left teams from much larger brigade’s in their wake.

“The team trained for many months and were assisted by various supporters and sponsors along the way. A team from Camborne have entered this competition for three consecutive years and have gained immensely from their involvement” said team leader Robert Martin
He cont: “The team would like to thank MacSalvors for the Dewalt saw they donated, Charlie at Camborne Car Spares for all the cars, Ben Davis for the training venue, Marcombe Marble for the donation of a marble fire place which was auctioned on EBay and Abbey National Bank for the donation of £250”
