Cornwall County Fire Brigade’s aim is to make Cornwall the safest place in which to live, work or visit – which is why it supports Community Safety Week. Community Safety is about making safer, stronger communities.

The Brigade is a proactive member of the Cornwall & the Isles of Scilly Community Safety Partnership. All members are dedicated to working together with others to pro-actively tackle safety issues in Cornwall.

Community Safety Week is a programme of events designed to promote and highlight Community Safety and the work of the many agencies involved in the Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Community Safety Partnership. It aims to increase community confidence regarding safety through the identification and promotion of safe practices.

Community Safety Week is being held from Saturday 11 September to Saturday 18 September 2004. Cornwall County Fire Brigade is taking part in a programme of events throughout Cornwall.

The main event is taking place on Friday 17th September 2004 at The Piazza, Lemon Quay, Truro. A road traffic accident will be reconstructed by the fire brigade and other emergency services. The aim of this is to demonstrate how horrific a car accident can be, and the amount of resources required when a road traffic accident happens on our roads.

“The main focus of the event will be the ‘extrication’ of the live casualties. This involves the various agencies ‘rescuing’ the trapped passengers” said PR Officer Davinia Grist

She cont: “Multi-agency training days are held regularly to ensure that skills required in the extrication of casualties safely and quickly are maintained. Cornwall has one of the highest numbers of fatal road accidents every year and firefighters attend more road traffic accidents than any other type of incident”
