Over 45 Firefighters have attended a fire in a former supermarket this evening. The initial alarm was raised at 18:27 to the fire, two crews from Tolvaddon were mobilised to the scene. On the firefighters arrival smoke was issuing from the building, A Hayle appliance was mobilised to the scene when a third appliance was requested. At 18:39 a request for ‘Make Pumps 5 and Aerial Ladder Platform’ was made, two further appliances from Perranporth and Penzance were alerted, along with an Aerial ladder platform from Truro.
Police were requested to attend for a road closure and to evacuate nearby properties. The derelict building measured 40 x 20 metres and was well alight with flames through the roof reported at 18:39. Crews initially set up covering jets supplied by hydrants. Due to the size of the fire additional specialist appliances were mobilised to the scene, these included an Incident Command unit from St Just, Breathing apparatus support from Falmouth and an Environmental support vehicle with supporting pump from Penzance. A welfare vehicle from St Dennis were also mobilised to the incident.
19:48Crews were using 6 breathing apparatus and four covering jets, the incident had been sectorised. The Aerial ladder Platform was confirmed in use at this time. Electrical engineers were requested to attend to isolate the power supply to the property.
At 22:18 it was confirmed that good progress had been made and that the fire had been extinguished. Two breathing apparatus wearers remained turning over and checking for hot spots.
