The Town Mayor Councillor Marjorie Roberts will be officially launching a pilot scheme which aims to make Hayle free from fire on Tuesday 28th September. The scheme will strive to make Hayle and the surrounding area a zero tolerance fire zone.
The ‘Hayle Safe’ initiative involves carrying out Home Fire Safety Checks in all homes in and around the town and fitting free smoke alarms in those properties deemed as 'high risk'. Dedicated firefighters will work with other emergency services in the town as well as community groups such as Age Concern and SureStart to help raise awareness amongst residents on how to be safe, at home, at work and in their day to day life.
Chief Fire Officer Mick Howell explains: “The project aims to bring together as many organisations and agencies as we can who are involved in community safety and to co-ordinate their efforts for the benefit of residents aHe cont: “In particular, the Fire Brigade will be putting two full time Community Fire Safety Officers “on the beat” in a high profile way for a two year pilot project. Steve Benney and John Navin will be working in the community with other organisations and agencies visiting homes to give advice on smoke detectors and promoting safety awareness in the town. The project is an exciting and unique opportunity to really tackle community safety on a broad front and for our part to drive down fire death and injury in the town”
Cornwall County Fire Brigade strives to stop fires before they start and that is why community fire safety work is its top priority. The Brigade carries out Home Fire Safety Checks across the County and works with other agencies to ensure that we reach the more vulnerable to raise awareness about the dangers of fire, and how to stop it happening to them.
The project in Hayle will be an extension of what Cornwall County Fire brigade has already been doing across the County, and members of Hayle Town Council are very enthusiastic about our proposals. The Brigade has spent some time working on a strategy to implement the ideas and is pleased to launch the new Hayle Safe Project. The pilot will also be used to spread successful initiatives across Cornwall.
At 11am a class of students from Bodriggy School, Hayle will be releasing 100 ‘Hayle Safe’ balloons into the air to represent how many smoke alarms will be fitted in the first two months of the project.
