Two appliances from St Austell Fire Station and a Flexi Duty officer attended this incident. It was a bonfire that had spread to hedge, fence and then a disused garage which measured approximately 4m by 3m. The crew used two hosereel and two sets of breathing apparatus to extinguish the fire.
The cause was accidental.
Good bonfire guidelines:
- Only burn dry, clean material such as branches or unpainted and untreated wood.
- Never burn household waste or anything containing plastic, foam or paint.
- Avoid lighting fires in unsuitable weather conditions.
- Avoid burning when air pollution levels are high in your area. Air quality can be checked on Defra's Pollution Forecast web page
- Keep your fire away from trees, fences and buildings.
- Never use oil, petrol or methylated spirits to light a fire.
- Never leave a fire unattended.
- Do not burn at frequent intervals.
