Fire Involving Hazardous Materials

At 12:08 this afternoon a call was received to a fire in a swimming pool pump house. Nine firefighters on two appliances from St Austell and Mevagissey were mobilised to the scene. On crews arrival it was confirmed there was a fire in a small detached building measuring 3 x 2 metres, crews approached the building wearing two breathing apparatus and one hose reel. On further investigation crews confirmed that a mix of hazardous materials had been involved in the fire. An Ambulance was requested to attend to treat three casualties on scene who had been tackling the fire on the arrival of the Fire service. Additional fire resources were mobilised to the scene including appliances from St Austell, Mevagissey and Truro, and an Environmental support unit and accompanying appliance from Penzance to assist with decontamination on scene. A Command Support unit was also mobilised from Launceston. Along with the pumping shed, a second larger building measuring 70 x 10 metres was involved in the fire, the building was smoke logged and a positive pressure ventilation fan was used to clear the building and then crews cut away at cladding to ensure that the fire was extinguished. Crews have remained on scene for some time monitoring the incident and taking regular temperature checks of the fire. At 16:02 crews using two breathing apparatus and one hose reel to extinguish the last of the fire.
