Strictly Embargoed Until 00:00 On Wednesday 13th April 2005 Community Action Day In Newquay

at 13/04/2005 09:00

Representatives from Cornwall County Fire Brigade, Devon and Cornwall Constabulary, Ocean Housing, Restormel Borough Council and the NHS will be involved in a community action day next Wednesday.

The aim of the day is to work with the residents in a ‘neighbourhood clean-up’ that won’t cost them anything. Abandoned and untaxed vehicles will be removed by the police, skips are provided to take away toxic products such as fridges, graffiti will be cleaned off, dog fouling and the correct removal of refuse will be addressed, firefighters will visit all homes offering free home safety checks and the fitting of smoke alarms and the police will provide advice on anti-social behaviour.

“There is normally a cost to remove untaxed vehicles and toxic products such as fridges, and penalties for those that allow their dogs to foul. This day of amnesty will hopefully help us and the residents to clean it up and provide advice to make the area a safer place in which to live. We have already had similar days in Bodmin and St Austell and they were extremely successful” said Community Safety Officer Anthony Bartlett

He cont: “Firefighters are also demonstrating the dangers of chip pan fires near Safeway. The fire service is called to many fires that involve people cooking after a night out. This is extremely dangerous, especially under the influence, as we can easily fall asleep and what we are cooking can catch alight. We advise that if you are hungry get a take away – don’t get taken away”.
