10.30am on Wednesday 10th May 2005 at Market Strand, St Ives
Devon, Cornwall and The Isles of Scilly Arson Task Force will be visiting St Ives tomorrow to advise local businesses on the correct storage and disposal of commercial waste.
The Arson Task Force continuously work with local businesses and councils to help drive down arson attacks across the county.
“The biggest fire risk in shops and stores is from fires begun deliberately. However, shop owners and managers can control this threat. Most of the arson fires affecting shops are lit outside. Dealing with the waste and rubbish properly will help to keep their premises secure from fire” said Station Officer Dave Keelan
Businesses should follow this simple advice:
Do not allow packaging, waste or rubbish to accumulate anywhere on the premises
Make sure all packaging, waste and rubbish is moved regularly to a safe storage place
The safest type of storage is metal bins with closed lids, kept away from the main building preferably in their own compartment or compound
Arrange regular and frequent collection of your rubbish
And most importantly make sure that waste awaiting for disposal is kept in a safe place and not accessible to the public
