3.30pm - 8pm on Wednesday 3rd August at Hayle Football Club

Cornwall County Fire Brigade, Devon and Cornwall Constabulary and students from Hayle Community School will be playing in a 5-a-side football match on Wednesday 3rd August at Hayle Football Club, Hayle.

This initiative is a follow up to the Safe Street Safe School¡¦ project which was launched in Hayle in March. The project is funded by Crimebeat, Neighbourhood Renewal Fund and Hayle Safe Team (Cornwall Fire Brigade) and as a result of this funding, a series of localised interventions with young people were carried out at Hayle Community School, a selection of feeder schools, and within the community in general.

The aims of the Safe Street Safe School project are:

To reduce incidents of violent crime committed by young people, against young people which can be intrinsically linked to bullying.
To reduce incidents of anti-social behaviour committed by young people in the community.
To increase the awareness of young people that any form of bullying is not acceptable, and that there is no such thing as "an innocent bystander - Dont stand by to watch, stand by to act"

Sergeant Jean Phillips said: Hayle has already benefited from a reduction in violent crime as a result of this project. Prior to the intervention by the team, for a six-week period, there were 14 recorded incidents of violence committed by young people against young people, which could be identified as being intrinsically linked to bullying issues¨.
She cont: Following this intervention work, the crime figures were then assessed and monitored for a further 6 weeks. In the 6-week period following the intervention work, there were no recorded incidents of violence between young people that were linked to bullying issues¨

Firefighter John Navin added: Following the success of the Safe Street Safe School project a roll-out programme was designed to include school and community interventions and group work¨

The Hayle Safe Team (Cornwall County Fire Brigade) decided to host a 5-a-side football match to improve relations between young people and the emergency services, lift community spirit and improve socialisation. We have had an overwhelming response from the students at Hayle Community College and we hope the afternoon and evening will prove to be a great success¨

The football match has been part funded by the Neighbourhood Renewal Community Chest , Hayle Town Council and Hayle Safe.
